Trail horses, working horses, and solid pleasure horses trained by Gary and Doris Hubbell of OutWest Guides make horse ownership a joyful experience. We’ve trained our horses to be gentle, calm, easygoing horses that anyone can ride, but we also like a horse with some “get up and go!”

Our sale horses are trained every day, whether someone rides them or not. We round up our horses and push them across the Crystal River every day—our horses aren’t afraid of water! Our pasture borders the Raggeds Wilderness area, and it’s common for bears, coyotes, mountain lions, lynx, elk, and deer to walk through our pasture. Our horses know the mountains—how to quietly stand tied, how to hobble, how to load in a trailer, how to cross water, and to let you put your slicker on without spooking. Most of our horses have been used at one time or another as packhorses, so they’re used to loads of rattling dishes and freshly killed game meat.

No, we don’t have any ribbons in our tack shed. We haven’t been to any shows lately. All we do is ride our horses, and ride them a lot.

Our herd has Tennessee Walkers, Missouri Foxtrotters, Arabians, Quarter Horses, Paints, Appaloosas, Morgans, and several outstanding draft crosses. We start with good conformations and good minds. We look for straight legs and strong backs, a nice pretty head, a kind eye, and good feet. We like gentle horses who like people, and that makes everything easier when you’re breaking out a colt.

We also look for horses that will fit our riding clientele. Some of our elk hunters are big, stout men who will weigh up to 280 pounds. That’s why we own 1,600-pound Morgan/Belgian draft crosses. Many smaller women and children come to ride with us during the summer, and that’s why we own 14-hand Arabians and Morgans. Smaller women will love our trail horses, and big men will find a terrific horse that can carry them.

Most of our horses are for sale. We keep our herd young, and we look for nice colts to bring along every year. Part of our business plan is to train and sell horses. Keep in mind that we RIDE our horses! While a professional trainer may charge you $700 to ride a colt for 30 days, your colt will be lucky to get 40 minutes of riding in a sand arena 5 days a week. When we ride a horse, we ride for 2-12 hours at a stretch. We’ll get a week’s training accomplished in one day. And it won’t be in a sandy arena—our training area is 120 square miles of rocky trails, muddy bogs, downed logs, bugling elk, snowstorms, falling trees, laughing children, dogs, tractors, shooting, and beginning riders.

You can take one of our horses most anywhere—to the show ring, to the mountains, to the backyard, to the foxhunt. We know that we’re putting a foundation under them that will help them excel in a variety of different situations.

Our gaited horses—Tennessee Walkers, Missouri Foxtrotters, Paso Finos—and our Arabians, Morgans, APHA paints, AQHA quarter horses, and warmblood Thoroughbred/Percheron and Belgian/Arabian draft crosses, will take great care of you on the trail and in the arena.
